Comments
I am torn for several factors, I start with the pros: the voice of james brown is excellent, really dynamic and groovy, and he also manages to dominate a big band as a true leader which he is. the arrangements are in some cases surprising (in particular the rendering of "your cheatin heart" is to be applauded) and have some nice counterparts. the lineup is varied and well chosen.cons: tempos too dilated, almost in every song there is a vamp in which james brown applies his vocal virtuosity and his "neighs" on the groove, and there are songs like "it's a man's world" that become exhausting. in addition, the general mood is too noisy, sometimes chaotic, and in the long run it weighs on the listener. definitely noteworthy experiment but I prefer james brown with a combo of less elements and more soul / funk.
